What Is Tesla Powershare? Using Your Tesla to Power Your Home
by Nick Zavala / October 16, 2026
The ice started coating the power lines around dinnertime. By 8 o'clock, the lights flickered once and went out, and the house began to cool. Out in the driveway sat a Tesla with a nearly full battery, holding more stored energy than most homes use in a day.
For Maryland and Virginia homeowners who drive an eligible Tesla, that battery doesn't have to sit idle anymore. Tesla Powershare lets your vehicle send power back into your home when the grid goes down. Below, we'll explain how it works, which vehicles qualify, what equipment you need, and how it pairs with a Tesla Powerwall.
What Is Tesla Powershare?
Tesla Powershare is Tesla's bidirectional charging feature. Most of the time, electricity flows one way, from your home into your car. Powershare lets it flow the other way too, so your vehicle's battery can power things outside the car.
Powershare has two main uses. For everyday use, eligible vehicles can power tools, campsite gear, tailgate setups, or even another electric vehicle. For home backup, Powershare connects your vehicle to your home's electrical system so it can keep the lights, refrigerator, and furnace fan running during an outage. Tesla calls this vehicle-to-home backup, and it's the feature most homeowners care about.
Which Vehicles Work With Powershare?
Every Cybertruck supports Powershare. Its built-in outlets include 120-volt outlets in the cabin and cargo bed, plus a 240-volt outlet in the bed that can deliver up to 9.6 kW for heavy-duty equipment or another EV.
The list is growing. According to Tesla's Powershare page, all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on or after October 1, 2026 are eligible, and some earlier Model 3 and Model Y vehicles are capable as well. To check your own car, open Software, then Additional Vehicle Info, and look for "Powershare Support: Enabled."
How Vehicle-to-Home Backup Works
Once your system is installed, Powershare home backup runs on its own. When the grid goes down, it detects the outage and lets your Tesla start powering the house automatically. There's no extension cord to run and no generator to fuel up in the cold.
Your vehicle needs to be plugged into a Tesla Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector for home backup to work. A Cybertruck can deliver up to 11.5 kW of power to the house. Tesla estimates a Cybertruck alone can back up a home for over three days, based on an average home using 30 kWh per day and a fully charged battery.
Real-world results depend on your home's usage, your vehicle, how charged it is when the outage starts, and whether you have solar panels feeding the system. Running electric heat or an electric range will shorten that timeline, while keeping usage to the essentials stretches it out.
Powershare With Powerwall vs. Powershare on Its Own
You can use Powershare as a standalone backup system or pair it with a Tesla Powerwall, and the equipment you need depends on which path you choose.
Homes that already have a Powerwall 3 and a Tesla Wall Connector need no additional equipment, according to Tesla. Support for Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ is listed as coming soon through an over-the-air update. Pairing the two gives you a second layer of backup power: the Powerwall handles the first stretch of an outage, and your vehicle extends it. By Tesla's numbers, a Cybertruck adds over three days of backup to a Powerwall system, while an eligible Model 3 or Model Y adds over two days.
Cybertruck home backup is still possible without a Powerwall. In that case, you'll need a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector, installed by a Tesla Certified Installer who can connect everything safely to your home's electrical panel.
What Does Tesla Powershare Cost?
Tesla lists the Powershare hardware at around $1,950, or less if you already have compatible equipment installed. For homes without a Powerwall, installation typically runs about $2,000 to $4,000, depending on how your home is set up and how complex the job is.
Treat these as Tesla's typical ranges, not final prices. A certified installer will look at your electrical panel, your existing equipment, and where your vehicle parks before giving you an exact quote. When a Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector are already in place, the added cost may be minimal.
Is Powershare Right for Your Home?
Backup power matters in the Mid-Atlantic, where winter ice storms and summer thunderstorms can knock out electricity across Maryland and Virginia for hours or even days. Powershare makes the most sense for households that already own an eligible Tesla or plan to buy one, since the vehicle doubles as a backup battery you're already paying for.
It's also a natural fit for homes considering a Powerwall. The Powerwall covers short outages and daily energy management, and the vehicle steps in when an outage drags on. Homes with solar get an added advantage, since panels can help recharge the system during the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tesla Powershare?
It's Tesla's bidirectional charging feature. Powershare provides vehicle-to-home backup by sending stored battery power to your house whenever the electricity cuts out, and it can also run tools and other devices.
Do I need a Powerwall to use Powershare?
No. A Cybertruck can handle backup on its own with a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. If you already have a Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector, there's nothing extra to buy.
How long can my Tesla power my home?
On a full charge, Tesla puts a Cybertruck at over three days of backup for an average home. How long yours lasts comes down to your usage, your vehicle, and whether solar is part of the system.
Can a Model 3 or Model Y use Powershare?
Yes, for vehicles ordered on or after October 1, 2026, along with some earlier models. Check your vehicle's software screen to confirm whether Powershare is enabled.
